Here is a close look at your Weber charcoal grill grate options. There are some pretty interesting choices to be made depending upon how you like to use your Weber kettle.
Weber Charcoal Grill Grate Options for 22.5 inch Kettles
Weber supplies three grill grate options for their 22.5 inch kettles. All of the Weber options are constructed of chrome plated steel. Within 2-3 months the chrome plating flakes off and these grates quickly rust out in 1-2 years. You can find the cheapest two Weber replacement grates at any Big Box store.
If you end up buying one of the cheap Weber grates then make sure you also buy a grill cover. If you keep your kettle covered then you can prolong the life of the grate before it rusts out.
Weber stopped selling long lasting stainless steel charcoal grill grates about four years ago.
Here is a great aftermarket stainless steel grate for Weber kettles that I highly recommend.
The grate has hinges on both sides of the grate so you can easily add more charcoal during long cooks. You also can leave the hinged section up to make room for larger pile of banked charcoal and wood chunks.
If you want to buy a Weber product and get some serious grill bling then look at the Weber Gourmet BBQ system. The Gourmet BBQ System
The starter set comes with a cast iron sear grate. The other inserts are sold separately.
A nice feature of Gourmet BBQ System is that the grate itself is slightly heavier than a standard Weber grill grate and should last longer.
The grate is hinged on the side so you can use this for “low and slow” smoking.
Something to keep in mind is that you do NOT need to purchase the actual grate to use the inserts.
You can buy the inserts individually and place them on top of a regular or hinged grate and they work fine. The only insert that actually requires the special grate is the wok.
I think the Cast Iron Sear Grate looks wicked cool. I will be buying one of these in the near future. What I love about the Sear Grate is that the cross hatch pattern is built into the design.
Once you put your steaks onto the hot cast iron you leave them in place until it is time to flip. There is no need to rotate. The longer, uninterrupted contact gives you better grill marks by default. The Sear Grate is about 12 inches in diameter which is large enough for two rib-eye steaks or four New York Strips.
I think the Weber Gourmet BBQ System is interesting but it pales in comparison to what you can do with the Craycort system.
Cast Iron Weber Charcoal Grill Grates
Weber does not make a cast iron grate for their kettles but Craycort does.
In my opinion the best Weber charcoal grill grate choice is the Craycort cast iron grate.
I have recently started using the Craycort cast iron grill grates and I love them. The grate is made of four removable modules that rest on a cast iron frame. The Craycort gives great sear marks and provides easy access to the charcoal. The extra inserts that are available really expand the possibilities of what you can cook on your grill.
If you want to learn more about these grates you can watch the video below from the BBQ Pit Boys or read my detailed review about Craycort cast iron grill grates.
If you are a serious griller that wants some cast iron on your kettle then I think Craycort is the best option.
Weber Charcoal Grill Grate Options for 14.5, 18.5 and 26.75 inch Kettles
The grill grate choices for these kettles are more limited than what is available for the 22.5 inch kettles. You can either get a standard Weber grate or a Craycort cast iron grate. Links to the products are given below.
Grill Grates for 14.5 inch kettles (Smokey Joe)
Grill Grates for 18.5 inch kettles (Jumbo Joe, 18.5 One Touch Silver, 18.5 One Touch Gold)
